11 Best Gay Friendly Places To Visit
WONDERING IS SPAIN GAY FRIENDLY?
By Liam Mulligan | Published on September 20, 2023 |Modified on August 30, 2024
When looking for a list of vacation destinations as an LGBTQ+ person, it is so important to check that the destination will be safe.
Being part of the LGBTQ+ community, I know the research that goes into ensuring that the place you want to visit will allow you to be your authentic self.
So is Spain gay friendly? Having visited Spain on many occasions, I highly recommend it as my number one gay travel destination!
Is Spain Gay Friendly?
Spain regularly features on lists of the best gay friendly countries to visit. Since the transition to democracy after the death of Franco in 1975, Spain has become one of the most liberal countries in the world with many laws protecting LGBTQ+ people.
Spain was one of the first countries to legalise same-sex marriage in 2005. It has made discrimination against LGBTQ+ people a criminal act and banned conversion therapy.
In 2006, Spain ensured transgender rights by allowing people from the community to use their preferred sex in government documents without undergoing surgical transition.
Crime against LGBTQ+ people is relatively rare, especially in the big cities and in areas with a focus on LGBTQ+ tourism. It is common to see gay couples and families.
In over 34 years of visiting Spain, I personally have never once felt unsafe due to my sexual orientation.

11 Best Gay Friendly Places In Spain
So with such progressive values, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a gay friendly destination in Spain. Here I will give you the lowdown on the 11 best gay friendly places in Spain to go on vacation.

Barcelona has two main LGBTQ+ districts, often referred to as “Gayxample” and El Raval.

Some popular gay bars include Punto BCN, Plata, El Cangrejo, Maricón Ghetto Bar and the Sky Bar @ Axel Hotel, all of which are in the Eixample district.
Barcelona also has some great gay beaches. The number one choice is Platja de la Mar Bella, located in the Poble Nou district. Focused around the Chiringuito BeGay bar, the beach fills up quickly, particularly in August when the circuit parties come to town.

LGBTQ+ nightlife centres around the hip Russafa district, which has been gentrified over the past few years. Russafa is open-minded and you will have no problems going out in any of the bars here.
We had a great time enjoying some chilled drinks in La Boba y el Gato Rancio before continuing the night at Piccadilly Downtown Club.

It offers a growing number of gay bars, clubs, and events, particularly in the Alameda de Hércules area. The city’s rich history, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine make Seville an unforgettable experience for all visitors.
Visitors can explore the city’s iconic landmarks. The Alcazar, the Cathedral, and the Plaza de España are all must-see attractions.
For nightlife, check out El Bosque Animado spending some time enjoying a cocktail on the terrace and El Baron Rampante which caters well to non-native speakers of Spanish.

Bilbao’s LGBTQ+ scene is continuing to grow. Its close proximity to lots of beautiful countryside offers a different perspective for the LGBTQ+ traveller.
Bilbao is rich in cultural attractions. The regeneration of the port area with the construction of the Guggenheim Museum in the late 1990s led to an increase in tourism and visitors to the city, with the museum being named one of the 12 Treasures of Spain in 2007.
The museum itself is a fantastic attraction for those interested in art. The nearby Casco Viejo has many quaint streets and fantastic places to eat.
For those interested in modernity and construction, check out the impressive Vizcaya bridge, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Bilbao’s industry and ingenuity.
Bilbao’s Aste Nagusia or Semana Grande takes place in August and is a fantastic time to visit the city. The city turns into one big party with fireworks every night for a week. Each outdoor area has its own theme with different areas catering to an LGBTQ+ crowd.
I was in Bilbao for Aste Nagusia in 2017 and felt so safe at the festival as a visibly LGBTQ+ person. It is not to be missed.

Pro Tip – For Game of Thrones fans, don’t miss the nearby island of Gaztelugatxe. Home to an isolated monastery, the islet was used as the setting for Dragonstone. It is about 45 minutes outside of Bilbao if you hire a car.
Where To Stay In Bilbao
To really get into the art aesthetic of Bilbao, my top hotel recommendation is the Miró Hotel. Located opposite the Guggenheim Museum, this boutique hotel is chic, stylish and conveniently located close to Bilbao’s main attractions.

How To Get Around Spain
Spain has a good train and bus network as well as a range of domestic flights servicing its major cities. For some areas, the train network is the best way to go. In other parts of the country, the bus network is either the only option or will get you there quicker.
By Train
Spain’s Renfe train network offers fantastic travel around the country and covers a large portion of Spain. There is a range of high-speed AVE trains and local city networks, making train travel a fantastic option for travelling around the country.
Train tickets can be booked on the Trainline website and there are a range of different ticket options and prices. Ida tickets indicate a one-way trip, whereas Ida y vuelta indicates a return journey.

By Car
A car gives you lots of freedom and lets you explore parts of the country that you might not otherwise see. Many reputable rental companies provide a wide range of vehicles to suit different preferences and budgets.
It’s advisable to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, and to carefully review the rental terms. Spain’s well-maintained road networks make driving in the country a breeze, but you may struggle to park in more urban areas.

By Domestic Flight
Air travel between Spain’s largest and most distant cities is an option depending on budget. Domestic flights will usually be more expensive than train or coach travel but could save you time.
There are daily flights between Madrid and Barcelona as well as flights between Spain’s other big cities. For visiting Palma de Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands, you have the option of a ferry or a domestic flight.
For Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands, you will almost certainly want to fly given their distance from mainland Spain. Good domestic flight options include Iberia, Vueling and Ryanair.

Final Thoughts: Is Spain Gay Friendly?
So in conclusion, is Spain gay friendly? A resounding YES!
Spain should definitely be at the top of your must-visit LGBTQ+ destinations. The country widely accepts LGBTQ+ people and the government is proactive in ensuring that LGBTQ+ people’s rights are enshrined in law.
That said, as in most countries, whilst the cities remain very liberal, it is important to take caution in more rural areas, where traditional attitudes may prevail.
In 34 years of coming to Spain (and many as a visibly out queer person!), I have had zero experiences with homophobia and have always been met by warm and friendly people who believe life is for living.
That’s not to say that Spain isn’t without its problems, but when looking at your next gay vacation, make sure you put Spain right at the top of your list!
