Bilbao Guggenheim, Cuisine, and Urban Innovation
Bilbao In A Nutshell
The fifth largest city in Spain and the largest city in the Basque Country, Bilbao is one of northern Spain’s top destinations.
My first visit to the city was in 2017 whilst on a tour of northern Spain. I loved it that much that I returned a few weeks later for the city’s Aste Nagusia celebrations. I returned for a third time in summer 2024 as my first stop on another tour through northern Spain.
Bilbao captivated me instantly! The city perfectly blends modernity with a traditional elements and a unique cultural vibe. Its jaw-dropping Guggenheim Museum, voted one of the 12 treasures of Spain is it’s crowning jewel and the catalyst for the regeneration of the city.
But modern art isn’t all the city has to offer! It is a dream destination for foodies!
Wandering the picturesque cobbled-streets of the Casco Viejo, you’ll stumble upon some fantastic pincho bars, serving some of the best food in all of Spain. It is the perfect place to grab a bit to eat.
Bilbao is also home to some impressive bridges, which showcases the city’s development over the years. The Zubizuri Bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is a striking white structure that gracefully spans the Nervión River, offering stunning views of the cityscape.
Another must-see is the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s oldest transporter bridge, blending industrial heritage with modern functionality.
With beautiful countryside and rolling hills surrounding Bilbao, it is the perfect place for nature-lovers and city-folk alike!
If you’re looking for the perfect mix of old and new, art and food, city and nature, put Bilbao right at the top of your list!
