Starting with a major event in Madrid’s calendar, Orgullo Madrid or Madrid Pride (known as MADO) is Europe’s largest Pride event and one of the biggest in the world. Centred around the first weekend in July, the LGBTQ+ community in Madrid comes together to celebrate.

Madrid Pride lasts for just over a week with a series of cultural events and partying that draws people from around the world. The Chueca neighbourhood is the focus for much of the celebrations with the majority of the gay bars in Madrid being located here.

The Madrid Gay Pride parade takes place on the final Saturday of the celebrations. Starting at 7 PM to avoid the oppressive Madrid summer heat, the parade begins near Atocha Station and ends at Plaza de Colón. With millions of Pride enthusiasts attending the parade, ensure you get there early to get a good spot!

The party doesn’t end with the parade. Dotted around the city are various stages, showcasing some of the best LGBTQ+ talent in Spain. These are at Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España, Plaza del Rey and Plaza de Pedro Zerolo. The closing party takes place at Plaza de España on Sunday night.

I attended Madrid Pride 2024, and it was an incredible experience. The city was alive with a feeling of celebration and inclusivity. Everywhere you looked, you could see people being their authentic selves and celebrating the victories the LGBTQ+ community has made in the fight for equal rights.

The parade was fantastic and the acts on the stage were entertaining, never letting the audience rest.

My highlight was the closing party on Sunday. Centred around the theme of ‘Pridevision’, the line-up celebrated Spain’s Eurovision history and featured a performance from current Eurovision champion Nemo. To top off the night, one of my favourite Spanish bands, Amaral closed the show to an electric crowd.

Anyone reading the blog will know I am a bit of a foodie. Spanish food is right at the top of my list of favourite cuisines. As the capital, Madrid benefits from a wealth of restaurants serving local dishes as well as from across Spain and internationally.

One of Madrid’s most iconic food destinations is the Mercado de San Miguel. An unmissable stop on even a short trip to Madrid, this market is a great place to try various tapas dishes. Located close to the Plaza Mayor, it is full of different stalls all offering different types of food from around Spain.

Another great option is the Mercado de San Ildefonso. This market is situated not far from Chueca, making it the perfect place to eat before visiting the neighbourhood. The market is spread out over three floors, offering food from Spain and across the world.

My personal favourite in Mercado de San Ildefonso was the Peruvian outlet, Raymi. Having lived in Peru many years ago, I always try Peruvian food wherever I go as I sadly cannot get it in my home city. Both the ceviche and the lomo saltado here were top notch and very authentic. The staff were great too!

If you’re a gay foodie like me, you will not go wrong in Madrid.

Pro Tip – If travelling on a budget, look out for restaurants offering the ‘Menú del Día’. This consists of 2 or 3 courses usually with a drink and bread for a very reasonable price.

Getting around Madrid is an absolute breeze! The city has a public transport network that connects the metro, bus network and trains to get around the city and to other places in Spain.

The public transport network is extensive. You are never more than a ten to fifteen-minute walk from the nearest metro station. The various lines are easy to navigate with connections clearly announced. Google Maps works well with the metro giving you exact information on where to change.

There is a dedicated metro stop in the district for those wanting to spend time in Chueca. This can be found on the lime green Línea 5, one stop from Gran Vía. Even if you are not getting the metro directly to Chueca, I recommend you visit as the entire station is painted with rainbow colours.

Metro stations all have wheelchair access and lifts for those with mobility issues. There are also designated spaces on buses and trains for wheelchair users.

For those landing at Madrid Barajas airport, you can get to the city centre via multiple methods. There is a metro station at the airport that connects to the city centre via Nuevos Ministerios. There is an extra airport charge of €3 to take the metro to the airport on top of the usual fare.

You can also get the designated airport bus that stops in Plaza de Cibeles. This costs €5 and runs 24 hours a day. You can get this from outside Terminal 1. Just look for the designated stop. Payment can be made on board by cash or card.

For those looking to travel around the city in style, you might want to consider taking a taxi. Both Uber and Bolt are fully functional in Madrid as well as the local app Free Now.
