Bilbao to San Sebastian Drive Time & Routes
Driving from Bilbao to San Sebastian takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the route you choose. If you’re planning to explore more of the Basque Country, hiring a car is my favourite way to make the journey. It gives you the freedom to stop in coastal villages, discover hidden viewpoints and travel at your own pace.
I’ve driven both the direct motorway and the scenic coastal route. While the motorway is ideal if you’re short on time, I’d always choose the coastal drive when I have a few extra hours. Some of my favourite places in northern Spain are along this route.
The four main driving routes are outlined below.
Route 1: Via AP-8 Toll Road (Fastest – 1 hour)
Distance: 62 miles | Drive time: 1 hour | Tolls: €5-30
This is Google Maps’ default route and your fastest option. You’ll take the N-637 then join the E-70/AP-8, one of Europe’s major highways. If time is tight, this is your best bet.
Pros: Fastest, most direct, excellent road conditions Cons: Toll costs, less scenic Best for: The quickest journey between Bilbao and San Sebastian.

Route 2: Via N-634/GI-632 (No Tolls – 2 hours)
Distance: 80 miles | Drive time: 2 hours | Tolls: Free
If you’re not in a hurry, this route offers a much better feel for rural Basque Country than the motorway, passing through small towns and green mountain landscapes that many visitors never see.
This local route takes you through beautiful Basque villages and countryside. You’ll travel via N-637 → N-634 → GI-627 → GI-632 → GI-2632 before rejoining the coastal route near San Sebastian.
Pros: No tolls, authentic villages, countryside views Cons: Longer journey, winding roads Perfect for: Budget travelers, cultural experiences, good weather Stop recommendation: Durango – a cinematic village with great mountain hiking.

Route 3: Coastal Route via San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Most Scenic – 3.5 hours)
Distance: 95 miles | Drive time: 3.5 hours | Tolls: Free
If you’ve got half a day to spare, this is the route I’d recommend. The Basque coastline is one of the most spectacular stretches of road in Spain, passing dramatic cliffs, charming fishing villages and some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. It’s also home to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, famous for appearing as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones.
The route: BI-2238 → BI-2405 → N-634 → GI-11, hugging Spain’s spectacular northern coastline.
Essential stops along the way:
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe – The Dragonstone location where you can walk across the bridge and climb to the hermitage. Arrive early to avoid crowds.
Lekeitio – One of the Basque coast’s most important fishing ports. Perfect for authentic seafood and traditional Basque dishes in a working harbor setting.
Playa de Saturraran – This 300-meter beach is famous for its twin rock formations called “the two sisters” (Satur and Aran). Great photo opportunity.
Zumaia – Another Game of Thrones filming location! This picturesque coastal town’s beach was where Daenerys Targaryen first set foot on Westeros. The dramatic cliff formations are stunning.
Best for: Photography enthusiasts, Game of Thrones fans, coastal scenery lovers, foodie adventures

Route 4: Via Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Capital – 2 hours)
Distance: 110 miles | Drive time: 2 hours | Tolls: Some sections
Want to visit the actual capital of the Basque Country? While Bilbao and San Sebastian get all the attention, Vitoria-Gasteiz is the seat of the regional Basque government and offers a more authentic, less touristy experience.
The route: AP-8 → N-622 (Vitoria-Gasteiz stop) → N-240 → AP-1 → AP-8
What to see in Vitoria-Gasteiz:
- Medieval old town with ancient walls and watchtowers
- Renaissance architecture throughout the historic center
- Cathedral and Plaza de la Virgen Blanca (White Virgin Square)
- World-class street art scene – the city is famous for its murals
If you’ve already visited Bilbao and San Sebastian or enjoy history and architecture, this is a worthwhile detour that lets you experience a very different side of the Basque Country.
Best for: Culture enthusiasts, architecture lovers, avoiding tourist crowds, authentic Basque experiences

My Recommendation
- Need to get there quickly? Take the AP-8.
- Want to avoid tolls? Choose the N-634 through the Basque countryside.
- Love photography and coastal scenery? Drive via San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and Zumaia.
- Interested in history? Detour through Vitoria-Gasteiz.
If it’s your first visit to the Basque Country and you have the time, I’d always recommend the coastal route. It’s one of my favourite drives in Spain.
Drive from Bilbao to San Sebastian: What to Expect
Whether you travel by car, bus or train, the journey between Bilbao and San Sebastian is part of the adventure. You’ll leave behind Bilbao’s industrial skyline and follow the lush green landscapes that make the Basque Country one of Spain’s most distinctive regions.
If you’re driving, expect winding coastal roads, dramatic cliffs and charming fishing villages, especially if you take the scenic route via San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and Zumaia. Travelling by bus offers a more direct journey, although you’ll still catch glimpses of the rolling hills and coastline along the way.
Once you arrive in San Sebastian, you’ll be rewarded with one of Europe’s most beautiful urban beaches, a world-famous food scene and a compact city that’s easy to explore on foot. Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying longer, it’s a destination that rarely disappoints.

Bilbao to San Sebastian by Bus
For most travellers, the bus is the best way to get from Bilbao to San Sebastian. It’s the fastest form of public transport, affordable and runs frequently throughout the day, making it my top recommendation if you don’t plan on hiring a car.
Direct buses take as little as 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on the service, and depart from Bilbao Intermodal Station. They arrive at Donostia Bus Station, which is conveniently located within walking distance of the Old Town, La Concha Beach and many of the city’s main attractions.
The main operator is ALSA, with regular departures throughout the day. Coaches are modern, comfortable and have luggage storage, making them ideal whether you’re travelling with a backpack or a suitcase.
| Journey Time | Approximate Fare | Direct Service |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes | From around €7.50 | Yes |
If you’re travelling during summer, Easter or other public holidays, I’d recommend booking your ticket in advance, as the most convenient departures can sell out.
Pro-Tip – If you’re arriving at Bilbao Airport, you don’t necessarily need to travel into the city first. There are direct buses from the airport to San Sebastian, which can save both time and the hassle of changing buses. I’ll cover this option in more detail later in the guide.

Bilbao to San Sebastian by Train
Although it’s possible to travel from Bilbao to San Sebastian by train, I wouldn’t recommend it for most travellers. Unlike the bus, there isn’t a direct service, so you’ll need to change trains along the way, making the journey significantly longer.
Depending on your connections, the journey typically takes between 4 and 5 hours, compared with just 1 hour 20 minutes by bus. While the route passes through some beautiful countryside, the extra travel time means it’s rarely the most practical choice if you’re simply travelling between the two cities.
If you enjoy travelling by rail or plan to stop in smaller Basque towns along the way, the train can still be an enjoyable experience. Otherwise, the bus offers a much faster, cheaper and more convenient journey.
| Journey Time | Approximate Fare | Direct Service |
|---|
| 4 to 5 hours | From around €58 | No |
Is the train worth it?
For most visitors, no. Unless you specifically want to travel by rail or include extra stops during your journey, I’d recommend taking the bus instead. It’s quicker, less expensive and far more straightforward.
Bilbao to San Sebastian by Taxi or Private Transfer
If convenience is your priority, taking a taxi or booking a private transfer is the easiest way to travel from Bilbao to San Sebastian. This is a particularly good option if you’re arriving at Bilbao Airport with lots of luggage or travelling as part of a group.
The journey usually takes between 1 and 1½ hours, depending on traffic, and you’ll be dropped directly at your accommodation in San Sebastian.
Expect to pay between €155 and €170 for a taxi, although prices can vary depending on the time of day and where your journey begins. If you’re travelling with three or four people, splitting the fare can make it much more reasonable.
For extra peace of mind, especially if you’re arriving on a late flight, I’d recommend booking a private transfer in advance. Your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall, help with your luggage and take you directly to your hotel without the need to queue for a taxi.
| Journey Time | Approximate Fare | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 1½ hours | €155–170 | Families, groups, late-night arrivals and door-to-door convenience |
Travel Tip
If you’re travelling alone or as a couple, the bus is usually much better value. I’d only choose a taxi or private transfer if convenience is more important than keeping costs down, or if you’re sharing the fare with others.

Bilbao Airport to San Sebastian
If you’re flying into Bilbao Airport (BIO), getting to San Sebastian is straightforward. The airport is around 100 km (62 miles) from San Sebastian, and you have several transport options depending on your budget and travel style.
By direct bus (my recommendation)
For most travellers, the direct airport bus is the best option. Operated by Lurraldebus, the service runs several times a day between Bilbao Airport and San Sebastian without the need to travel into Bilbao city centre first.
The journey takes around 1 hour 15 minutes, making it both the quickest and most affordable public transport option.
| Journey Time | Approximate Fare | Direct Service |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour 15 minutes | Around €17 | Yes |
By car
Hiring a car from Bilbao Airport gives you the flexibility to explore the Basque Country at your own pace. The drive to San Sebastian takes around 1 hour, or longer if you choose one of the scenic routes I’ve covered earlier in this guide.
By taxi or private transfer
A taxi or pre-booked private transfer is the most convenient option, especially if you’re arriving late at night or travelling with lots of luggage. Journey times are around 1 hour, with prices typically starting from €155.
Which option should you choose?
If you’re staying in San Sebastian and don’t plan on exploring further, I’d take the direct airport bus. It’s simple, comfortable and avoids the hassle of collecting a hire car or changing buses in Bilbao.
If you’re planning a Basque Country road trip, hiring a car at the airport is well worth considering. It gives you the freedom to explore places like San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Lekeitio and Zumaia along the way.
