Privacy Policy Link

I’ve visited Barcelona in every season and almost every month of the year. Over the years I have delved deep into this incredible city, so I have got you covered with my top tips for visiting Barcelona in October.

Located on the Mediterranean Sea in Catalonia, Barcelona is a city that has something to offer at all times of the year. Its warm and pleasant climate means even later on in the year it is rare to be met with extremely cold temperatures.

It is definitely worth considering a trip to Barcelona outside of the peak summer months.

What To Do In Barcelona In October

Coming hot on the heels of the peak summer season, October is the perfect time to visit Barcelona. In reality, you are going to have a good time in Barcelona at any point in the year but visiting the city in October will offer you cooler temperatures and fewer tourists meaning more bearable days and fewer queues.

The city has so many things to offer that it’s a struggle to decide where to begin! Here are some of the best things to do if you’re visiting Barcelona in October:

1. La Sagrada Familia

No trip to Barcelona is complete without visiting the Sagrada Familia. It features on all of my itineraries and things to see posts in Barcelona and for good reason. The Sagrada Familia is an astonishing monument and one of the 12 Treasures of Spain! It is an essential stop on any Barcelona tour, no matter what time of year.

The Sagrada Familia

So why is October a great time to visit the Sagrada Familia?

Firstly, fewer tourists. The site can get extremely busy during the summer when Barcelona hits peak season. By visiting in October, you will find fewer queues, have more time to explore and have to wait less time. That said, this incredible site will have visitors no matter what time of year.

Secondly, the weather! No longer the unbearable temperatures of summer, October has the perfect weather for outdoor activities and walking around meaning a more pleasant sightseeing experience. As well as spending time in the cathedral, the weather will be perfect for some chilled relaxation in the nearby park.

Thirdly, the leaves will be beginning to change. With beautiful autumnal colours in the nearby trees, October is the perfect time to snap some memorable photographs. The contrast of the autumn foliage with the stunning architecture is sure to create some incredible photographic memories.

Tickets for the Sagrada Familia currently start at €26 and can be bought online prior to your visit. Make sure you download the Sagrada Familia app for a brilliant audio guide explaining the various elements that make up the famous cathedral.

If you manage to visit on a bright autumnal day, be amazed at the incredible light display caused by the building’s huge stained-glass windows.

2. Parc Güell

Another great option for October is a visit to Parc Güell. As with the Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell is one of Barcelona’s most-visited sites and in summer it can get overcrowded and very hot. Visiting in October means a much more pleasant experience.

Without the overbearing summer sunshine, you can enjoy the park in much better conditions. Getting to the park involves either a bus or taking the metro to the bottom of the hill and walking up.

In summer this walk can tire you out before you even arrive at the park but in October, the walk will be much more pleasant.

Make sure you check out the mosaic terrace at the top of the park for breath-taking views of the city skyline. Spend some time here relaxing after the walk up the hill and taking photos. Then head down to the municipal garden.

Down here you have to have a photo taken at ‘El Drac’, the giant mosaic salamander fountain. Put your hand in its mouth for good luck and snap that photo as a souvenir.

Spend the rest of the time exploring the park in the pleasant October temperatures. There is the Gaudí House Museum if the rain comes and a covered area to the park.

Since 2013, the park has required an entrance fee and is very popular so make sure you book your tickets in advance.

3. Barcelona Aquarium

If met with a rainy day in Barcelona in October, head to Barcelona Aquarium. Located in the Port Vell area of the city, the aquarium is the perfect place to escape the rain and still have a good time.

First opening in 1995, the aquarium is now home to 11000 animals and over 450 different species. It contains the most species of Mediterranean fish in the world!

The aquarium is not only a place for visitors to see various marine wildlife but is also a leading centre for research into the Mediterranean’s marine environment.

As you step inside, you’ll be greeted by a mesmerizing world of colourful fish, sharks, and even some adorable penguins.

The highlight, though, has to be the massive Oceanarium, where you can walk through a transparent tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays, and other aquatic creatures. It’s like a real-life scene from a documentary!

Whether you’re a marine enthusiast or just looking for a unique experience, Barcelona Aquarium is a fantastic place to spend a few hours and get up close and personal with some of the ocean’s most incredible inhabitants. Don’t forget to check the feeding schedules for an extra thrill!

The aquarium is open 365 days a year from 10:00 am with closing times varying between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm depending on the time of year. Tickets start at €25 for adults and €18 for children with family packs available. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment!

4. FC Barcelona Football Match

For those football fans, no trip to Barcelona would be complete without seeing the mighty Barça play. Usually based in Camp Nou, the stadium is currently undergoing renovations with the team playing at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc for the 2023-24 season.

The stadium will reopen at 50% capacity in 2024-25 before reopening fully in the 2025-26 season. If you are visiting Barcelona in October, the football season is in full swing, giving you the perfect evening out.

That said, a trip to either stadium will be a great experience. The Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc was built for the 1992 Olympics and was the home of Barcelona’s cross-city rivals RCD Espanyol for many seasons before they relocated themselves.

A photo of Camp Nou in Barcelona before a match

On my first trip to Barcelona in 2004, I attended my first Barcelona match, seeing the likes of Ronaldinho, Edgar Davids, and current PSG boss Luis Enrique.

Returning in 2012, I was lucky to see one of the greatest teams of all time featuring Lionel Messi, David Villa and former Barça boss, Xavi. Both experiences were incredible.

Tickets are surprisingly easy to get hold of. You can buy them from the team’s official website. I recommend that you buy them earlier to snap the best-value seats but if you are happy to pay more, you can often get them up until the day of the match.

If FC Barcelona are not playing at home when you are there and still fancy a football experience, consider heading to see RCD Espanyol.

Located in Cornellà de Llobregat, outside of the city centre but easily accessible, Espanyol currently plays in the 2nd division. Their stadium was opened in 2009 and tickets can be bought from their website.

5. Sitges Film Festival

Sitges is one of Catalonia’s top resorts. Particularly popular as an LGBTQ+ destination, the coastal town offers a beautiful old town, great beaches, and some fantastic restaurants. It is a safe space for people to be who they are, free from prejudice.

Sitges is popular throughout the year but gets especially busy during the summer months when LGBTQ+ people descend upon the town for a summer of fun and frivolity.

Visiting in October, you will find a calmer town with fewer tourists. With only a half-hour train ride separating Sitges and Barcelona Sants station, the town is the perfect day trip from the city.

What’s more, if you are visiting Barcelona in October and make the trip to Sitges then you will be in town for the Sitges Film Festival. Established in 1968, the festival will be holding its 57th edition in October 2024.

The festival is known for its edgy, diverse, and often spine-tingling lineup and showcases a wide range of genres providing something for everyone.

What sets Sitges apart is its unique atmosphere, where you can catch both mainstream blockbusters and avant-garde indie films, often attended by their directors and stars.

The festival’s red-carpet events and awards ceremonies add a touch of glamour to the proceedings, making it a hotspot for international film premieres and industry networking.

But it’s not all about the silver screen; Sitges’ charming old town provides the perfect backdrop for lively discussions, panels, and late-night parties where you can rub shoulders with fellow cinephiles and maybe even spot a famous face or two.

And with the Mediterranean’s sparkling waters just steps away, you can take a breather between screenings on Sitges’ pristine beaches.

Whether you are a film buff or a casual visitor, taking the time to visit Sitges during the annual film festival is sure to be an unforgettable experience!

6. Tibidabo Amusement Park

Tibidabo Amusement Park is one of Barcelona’s most iconic sites and a great activity when visiting Barcelona in October. With breathtaking views of the city and a mix of vintage and modern rides, it’s the perfect place for a fun-filled day of adventure and nostalgia.

The amusement park is located on Tibidabo, a hill overlooking the city. The park was built in 1899 and opened in 1905 and is among the oldest amusement parks in the world. Most of the original rides are incredibly still in use!

The park is split over five levels with guests working their way down the levels as they progress through the park. The top level is 1,693 feet above sea level and offers great views of the city. It contains Avió, a plane modelling the first commercial flight from Madrid to Barcelona in 1927. With a great viewing point of Barcelona, it is one of the star attractions.

Other must-see attractions are the historic Giradabo, a charming Ferris wheel that’s been spinning since 1928, and it’s a must-ride for anyone looking for a dash of nostalgia. For thrill-seekers, don’t miss the Muntanya Russa roller coaster, a wooden beast that’ll have you screaming and laughing all at once.

The park’s opening hours vary depending on the season, so it is best to check the website. In October, the park is generally open at the weekends but closed during the week. Tickets can be bought directly from the park.

7. Day Trip To Montserrat

Heading out on a day trip from bustling Barcelona to the serene beauty of Montserrat is like taking a breather from the city’s chaos.

If this is not your first time in Barcelona and you are looking to see more of the surrounding area, Montserrat is a great choice. And with cooler weather in Barcelona in October, the experience will be much more enjoyable.

Start your day early by getting the train from Plaça d’Espanya station to Montserrat-Aeri. Trains start running at 8 am so try to catch an early one. The train to Montserrat takes about an hour.

When you get to the station, you can choose to either take the cable car or the funicular. Both are great and will provide some stunning views.

A view of Montserrat in Catalonia

Your first stop should be the Montserrat Monastery. The Basilica of Montserrat is the site of the famous Black Madonna statue. Take time to appreciate the serene atmosphere and perhaps attend a choir performance if there’s one scheduled during your visit.

After lunch, you can either embark on one of the many hiking trails in the Montserrat Natural Park or explore the cultural attractions in the area. The Santa Cova Chapel and the Montserrat Museum are popular options for a cultural visit.

Don’t miss the opportunity to take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Catalonia from the viewpoints around Montserrat. The vistas are especially great in the afternoon light.

As the day winds down, make your way back to Montserrat-Aeri for the descent. Ensure you check the train schedule in advance to catch a return train to Barcelona that suits your schedule.

8. Magic Fountain at Montjuïc

The Magic Fountain at Montjuïc is one of my favourite tourist spots in Barcelona if visiting at the weekend. I remember first visiting the fountain on my first trip to Barcelona back in 2004. I had no idea what to expect and thoroughly enjoyed the show. If I am in Barcelona at the weekend, I always try and make it to see the show!

The fountain is situated below the Palau Nacional on the Montjuïc mountain. The fountain sprays 700 gallons of water a second and incorporates an incredible light and music show. Performances take place every half-hour at the weekend and use a mix of classical, film and modern pop songs.

The show is free to watch and is a great place to relax and hang out with friends.

Here are a couple of ways to reach the mountain:

Metro via Plaça d’Espanya

Perhaps the easiest way is to take the metro to Plaça d’Espanya. Here pass between the two big columns and continue your way up towards the palace until you reach the top. The fountain is impossible to miss!

Take The Cable Car

If you are staying near the Barceloneta neighbourhood, you may want to consider the cable car. Offering great views over the city, this trip is sure to leave you with some lasting memories. You can find the station near Barceloneta.

Tickets can be bought online or at the ticket booth. Always check operating hours and prices before you visit. The cable car will drop you off at the upper station on Montjuïc Hill, close to the Magic Fountain and the other attractions in the area.

9. Labyrinth Park Of Horta

One of Barcelona’s more off-the-beaten-path attractions, the Labyrinth Park of Horta is located in the Horta-Guinardó district of the city. It is a historical garden and the oldest of its kind in the city. There is an 18th-century neoclassical garden and a 19th-century romantic garden.

The Labyrinth of Horta

The star attraction of the gardens is its hedge maze on the lower terrace. With the cooler temperatures in October, an afternoon exploring the gardens and getting lost in the maze is the perfect activity. Entry to the gardens is free so if you are looking for a cheaper activity that is fun for all ages, this could be the one.

To get to the labyrinth, take the L3 metro line towards Trinitat Nova and get off at Mundet. The park is a short walk from the metro.

10. La Boquería Market

Is there a more perfect way to spend a few hours than exploring Spain’s culinary delights? Barcelona is blessed with numerous markets across the city. But perhaps the most famous one is La Boquería.

Located in the heart of Barcelona, the market is a sensory paradise that will tantalize your taste buds. This vibrant and bustling market, officially known as Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boquería, is a food lover’s dream come true.

As you step inside, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colours from the fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers that adorn the stalls. The aroma of spices, the sizzle of grilling seafood, and the chatter of vendors and visitors create an electric atmosphere that’s impossible to resist.

Beyond the gastronomic delights, La Boquería is also a cultural experience. It’s a place where locals and tourists converge, making it a fantastic spot for people-watching and soaking in the lively spirit of Barcelona.
